Take the Ethernet cable that came in the box (or any Cat5e/Cat6, doesn’t matter). Plug one end into the yellow port on the back of the Orbi router (it says “Internet” above it).
The other end? Straight into your modem’s Ethernet port. Plug in the power. And wait for the devices to boot up properly.
Grab it from the App Store or Google Play. It’s Netgear’s official app — black background, purple icon, can’t miss it.
Unplug your existing router if you had one. Keep the modem powered on and ready. If your ISP uses PPPoE or some login stuff, jot that down – you might need it later.
Hook up the Orbi router to the modem with the included Ethernet cable. Power it up. Wait for the little ring LED to do its thing – it should go solid white, then pulse magenta. That means it’s booting up and trying to connect.
Let it boot up. Don’t touch anything. It takes like 2-3 minutes. If the magenta ring hangs around too long (like more than 5 minutes), something’s wrong – probably can’t get to the internet. Reboot the modem and Orbi and try again.
Open the app. It’ll ask if you’re setting up a new system. Tap yes. Grant it all the permissions it begs for (Bluetooth, location, etc).
The app should start scanning for the Orbi router. Sometimes it’s instant. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds. If it just spins forever, close the app and relaunch it.
The app will walk you through naming your network (SSID), setting a password, creating a Netgear account (ugh), and checking for firmware updates. Do it all, but pause on the firmware part. If your internet’s shaky or not 100% stable yet, skip the update and do it later from the web interface.
Grab an Ethernet cable. Plug your computer straight into the Orbi router (not the satellite, the main router — the one that says “Router” on the back).
If you don’t have an Ethernet port on your laptop, congrats on being modern. Get a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
Unplug your modem from power. Wait like 30 seconds. Plug the modem into the yellow port on the Orbi router. THEN plug the modem back in. Wait a minute or two until both are powered up and talking to each other. Don’t rush this.
If you get blue or amber, congrats. Move the satellite to wherever you want, plug it back in, and it should reconnect. Done.
If that sync doesn’t happen naturally, do it the manual way:
Seriously. The Orbi app is pretty, but dumb. I had two satellites and both just blinked white for hours. App kept saying “connecting” like it was doing something. It wasn’t.
Fix: Plug in the satellites after the router is fully up. Like, wait 5 mins. Then plug in one satellite at a time. Not all at once. Let it boot, sync, then do the next.
You might need to hit the sync button on both router and satellite. It’s old-school, but it works.
This is dumb, but out-of-the-box firmware is often garbage.
Fix: After you get the router online, go to orbilogin.net on a laptop (don’t rely on the app here) and check for updates. Update the router AND each satellite manually if needed. Sometimes they don’t all update together.
Pro tip: If the satellite refuses to update, try plugging it directly into the router with Ethernet. Update it wired. Then unplug and place it back.
This URL doesn’t work half the time. Especially when DNS gets weird.
Fix: Try the IP directly — usually it’s 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1. Still no luck? Connect with Ethernet and try again. Or just restart the whole system (router first, then satellites).
This one nearly made me throw mine in the trash.
Fix: Go into Advanced > Wireless Settings. Turn off “Daisy Chain Topology” unless you need it. Sometimes satellites talk to each other instead of the router, and it screws things up if they’re too far apart.
Also: Lock in a static IP for each satellite under DHCP settings. Sometimes the IP lease expires and the satellite loses connection for no reason.
If it’s just acting possessed and nothing works:
Fix: Paperclip in the reset hole, hold 10+ secs until the LED flashes. Do this for router and each satellite.
Then start fresh: router first, then satellites one by one. Painful, but sometimes it’s the only way to get a clean slate.
